Church registers

Church registers are a principal source of genealogical data. The dates of births, marriages and deaths were entered in the church registers by the parish priests. The oldest church registers in many Franconian parishes date back to the 16th century. Unfortunately during the last centuries several of these valuable registers were destroyed by wars or other events.

Many church registers are still in the possession of the church offices of the respective parishes. The majority of church registers, however, are stored in church archives:

Family books and family registers

The GFF has in its stock family books, family registers and local clan records for more than 200 parishes. Family registers mostly include the contents of the church registers of a parish arranged by family names and families. In the best case you can directly transcribe from such registers your personal line of descent in the respective place.
